Skip the Detox Kits: 5 Natural Wellness Solutions

Woman looking at supplement

Feeling sluggish and bloated? Before you hit the panic button and splurge on fancy detox kits, you could explore some gentler natural wellness solutions.

My experience as a Detox Specialist taught me that our bodies have amazing self-cleansing abilities. Therefore let’s look at other ways to support those natural processes instead of resorting to harsh cleanses.

While I admit that such kits can be useful in certain situations, it’s generally wise to avoid spending money on products offering a ‘magical quick fix.’ They could even have unexpected side effects that we didn’t sign up for. Therefore, buyer beware…

And here’s the good news: for a safe and effective detox or cleanse, we actually don’t need strange-tasting teas, dubious supplements or unpleasant strange diets (as the younger Me had thought!).

What those fancy kits or plans don’t tell you is that your body has its own amazing built-in purifying system. It’s got an impressive elimination process that involves vital organs like your liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, and digestive system working together.

You can use simple daily rituals to support your organs so they can go through their natural detoxification processes using gentle, nourishing methods. No deprivation or weird concoctions required.

And I’m confident you’ll notice the benefits pretty quickly – increased energy, glowing skin, better digestion and more. Just use a few inexpensive healthy practices and your body will do the rest. After all, who doesn’t love an easier and safer way to feel vibrant and rejuvenated (and maybe even shed a few pounds)?

Here are some of the ones that I love.

The Five Simple Detox Rituals

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables for optimal health

#1 Nourish Your Body

It’s one of the most important steps you can take. Namely, focus on what foods and drinks you put into your body. Prioritize a rainbow of fresh fruits and vibrant veggies like leafy greens, cruciferous favourites like broccoli and cauliflower, nutrient-dense berries, and avocados.

Add nuts, seeds, beans, tofu and some whole grains. As you ditch processed junk foods you’ll notice that you’ll have more energy, glowing skin, and better digestion. Plus there’s a bonus: when you nourish your body better, you’ll have reduced cravings for unhelpful foods.

Two more tips which should not be left out:
a) Best stop smoking. It’s one of the kindest things you can do for your body.
b) Because your liver is one of the key players in the purification process, reduce or avoid alcohol. Excessive alcohol can harm your liver by causing fat build-up, inflammation, and even scarring. As with most things, moderation is key to keeping that organ in good shape.

#2 Give Your Tongue a Good Scrubbing

After brushing, try a metal tongue scraper (no, not just the back of your toothbrush!). This weird tool removes more build-up, bacteria, and toxins than brushing alone. Scraping your tongue every morning is an easy way to freshen your breath and reduce toxin accumulation. Here’s a quick video showing you how it’s done. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes an easy daily ritual that helps your mouth stay fresh and clean.

#3 Rinse and Reset Your Belly

You can kickstart your digestion and stay more regular by drinking 8-16 ounces of warm water first thing in the morning. Not only does this rehydrate your body after a night’s sleep, but it also helps flush out any lingering food waste. It’s like giving your belly a fresh start instead of holding onto last night’s leftovers. The warmth aids digestion too.

Want an extra digestive boost? Add a slice of lemon for a vitamin C kick, a knob of ginger or some ginger powder for its anti-inflammatory benefits, a sprinkle of turmeric for antioxidant power, or a splash of apple cider vinegar to stimulate digestive enzymes.

If choosing the vinegar, be sure to rinse after so you don’t damage your teeth with the acidity.

Because I find warm water on its own a bit boring I like to add different herbs and spices, slices of fruit or even veggies. It makes my warm water much tastier.

#4 Dry Brush for Silky Smooth Skin

This is one of my favourites. Dry brushing helps your skin do its detox duty by boosting circulation and lymph flow. Using a natural, cruelty-free brush with firm bristles, gently sweep from feet to heart in long, overlapping motions. Go easy over sensitive areas like the breasts. As you become accustomed to this, you can apply more pressure.

Not only will dry brushing loosen dry skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite, but you’ll look and feel amazing afterwards. The increased blood flow gives you a healthy, radiant glow. And your body lotions will absorb and work better as well after you remove dead skin cells. Try this ritual before showering or your Ayurvedic self-massage. You’ll love it!

#5 Ayurvedic Self-Massage with oil

After dry brushing, add this Ayurvedic self-massage known as Abhyanga. It’s an ancient practice that’s ultra-nourishing and helps to detox the body. Warm up a few tablespoons of virgin coconut, sesame or almond oil until just comfortably hot. Using fluid strokes, massage the oil into your skin from head to toe. Work it well into your skin. We are told to focus on deep breathing during the massage to improve its overall benefits and to aid relaxation.

Massage oil

This easy ritual nourishes and protects your skin and it also enhances circulation, calms the mind, and relaxes you. Give the oil about 15-20 minutes to do its magic before jumping into a warm (not hot) shower to press that nourishment into your pores.

Stick to just a little soap or maybe a gentle, natural cleanser so you don’t wash away all that good lovely oil you just applied.

Well, these were my tips for five simple, natural, and super effective ways to back up your body’s built-in detox system – no expensive programs, fads or gimmicks required! Just gentle daily practices to give your amazing body the little nudge it needs to do its job.

And in closing, I really like what Dr Oz once said: “The best detox is a healthy lifestyle”.
