I think I better explain what I mean by “don’t diet”. It should actually read: don’t drastically reduce your daily calories and follow a crazy bootcamp diet. It will jolt your body into starvation mode.
Because your body will do everything in its power to save you from starving…it will reduce its fat burning mode and instead turn you into a fat storing machine. And you do NOT want that to occur.
When you don’t eat enough of the right calories, your system starts looking for its own nutrients. I will attack your muscles and your bones first. Not your fat layers. How annoying is that?
And when your system starts ‘eating up’ muscle tissue, your metabolic rate gets slower and slower, causing even more stalled weight loss …OR fast weight gain when you return to eating somewhat ‘normal’ sized portions again.
So please eat right and do some resistance exercise or light weights, to retain as much muscle tissue as possible. This way you’ll lose body fat and create a way better shape..
Originally when we, as health coaches, started to study nutrition and weight loss in 1970’s we were told: put people on 800 to 1000 calories a day for weeks on end. That was the done thing in those days.
Well, in 1981 when I opened my first weight loss business, I went out on a bit of a limb. I started to offer 1200 and 1500 calories to ensure we did not activate starvation mode. People said I was crazy and did not want to give it a try. But as time went on, most other weight loss companies followed suit and also introduced higher calorie levels, finally people started to eat better.
Because after all: on a 800 or 1000 calories plan you simply cannot get all your nutrients to stay fit, healthy, full of energy with beautiful glowing skin. A tired, prematurely aged, skinny stick insect is not the look you want.
